Opticians VAT Services - Case Studies

Case 1 - Turning bad news into good news

Our client received a demand for over £4,000 from Customs which he duly paid on advice from his former accountants. Some time later the owner contacted A E L for a second opinion and following our free review of his case, we advised him that he was actually entitled to a repayment of VAT. Furthermore we agreed for the majority of our fees to be charged on a success fee basis. Within 6 weeks, A E L had successfully appealed against the demand and we negotiated a VAT repayment for him of over £6,000 plus statutory interest.

Case 2 – A new VAT method and a large repayment cheque

The former VAT advisors of this independent group of opticians had been in protracted negotiations with Customs for seven years without ever getting close to reaching agreement on VAT exemptions for spectacles. A E L were instructed to take the case over and within 6 months a substantial VAT repayment was released by Customs. A E L also prepared and filed an output tax method relating to contact lenses which had been ignored by the previous advisors. Following agreement with Customs of the new method for contact lenses, an additional repayment cheque in excess of £40,000 was received by our client.

Case 3 – Simplifying the paperwork saved £20,000

A E L were instructed by the practitioner to advise on a format to be used for notifying patients under a Separately Disclosed Charges system. The changes to the method of accounting for VAT would not only save the practice in excess of £20,000 over the following 3 years, but save the owner a great deal of time and effort when preparing his VAT returns.
